On the 1st of January 1801, I was promoted to Vice Admiral of the Blue and on the 13th I hoisted my flag in the San Josef at the capture of which I had assisted on the Glorious St Valentine's Day in 1797. On the 12th of February I shifted my flag to the St George in which ship I sailed to join the fleet then preparing at Great Yarmouth for the expedition to the Baltic. For an account of the Battle of Copenhagen, fought against the gallant Danes on the 2nd of April, I refer to my official dispatch.

On the 6th of May I was appointed Commander-in-Chief in the Baltic and on 22nd May His Majesty was pleased to elevate me to the rank of Viscount, although to the eternal shame of our country no official awards were made to my gallant comrades-in-arms.
